SPEECH BY SHRI K.R.NARAYANAN, PRESIDENT OF INDIA, WHILE ACCEPTING CREDENTIALS FROM MR. U TIN LATT, AMBASSADOR-DESIGNATE OF THE UNION OF MYANMAR TO INDIA

NEW DELHI, MONDAY, APRIL 12, 1999

Excellency,

It gives me great pleasure to receive from His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, the Letter of Credence appointing you as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar. I extend a warm welcome to you to our country and hope that your stay in India will be fruitful as well as enjoyable.

India is committed to a policy of friendship, good neighbourliness and all-round co-operation with Myanmar. We are close neighbours who have many common interests at the bilateral, regional and international level. Sustained interaction between the peoples of our two countries spanning several centuries, has ensured a long tradition of stable and friendly relations. Co-operation between the two countries has in recent years grown to encompass a wide range of areas, such as agriculture, science and technology, education and cultural exchanges.

I am confident that during Your Excellency's tenure, relations between India and Myanmar will be strengthened further in the mutual interests of the peoples of our two countries. I take this opportunity to extend my Government's full co-operation to you in your efforts to strengthen further the existing close and cordial ties between India and Myanmar. Please also convey to His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council my good wishes for his good health and personal well-being and for the progress, happiness and well-being of the people of Myanmar.
